Warsaw - The US will strike no deals with Russia at the expense of Central Europe, US Vice President Joe Biden told a Polish daily as he began a visit to discuss a new missile defence shield and to mend ailing relations after original plans for the system were scrapped. "Nothing about you without you," Biden said in an interview with the daily Rzeczpospolita. He added that the new missile shield is more effective, versatile and includes more advanced technology than the previous Bush-era proposal. US President Barack Obama said on September 17 that he would opt for a more advanced system for meeting short- and medium-range threats and to counter an Iranian attack on Europe. Obama's decision was welcomed by Russia, which viewed the long-range system as a threat to its nuclear deterrent. But Polish officials were more critical, noting that the decision to abandon the earlier plan was announced on the 70th anniversary of the Soviet invasion of Poland in World War II. Biden said that improved US-Russian relations will improve Europe's security. He mentioned their cooperation in reducing their nuclear arsenals, stabilizing Afghanistan and preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. But Biden called Poland a key friend in the region and said he would never forget the Polish-Americans in his home state of Delaware who in 1972 helped him in his first bid for the Senate. His visit to Warsaw was set to include meetings with Prime Minister Donald Tusk and President Lech Kaczynski, along with a visit to the Warsaw Stock Exchange and a meeting with Polish soldiers who had served in Afghanistan. Commentators in Poland hoped Biden's trip would mend ailing relations and clarity the Obama administration's plans. Biden was set to travel to Romania for discussions on Thursday, then to Prague for meetings on Friday. ..
