Many of these private-sale companies are now trying to extend the same model to travel deals. In the last few months, both Rue La La, a division of GSI Commerce, and the Gilt Group, with a new site called Jetsetter, have begun posting big discounts for luxury hotel rooms at popular vacation spots. Now a new site called PackLate is adding a new and interesting twist to the idea. This Philadelphia-based start-up, which raised about $700,000 in seed capital from local investors, is trying to persuade vacation rental companies to gradually lower their rates on properties that remain vacant for impending dates. So for example, a deluxe condo in Telluride, Colo., appears to start at $700 a night in March but then drops to $415 on available nights that are two weeks out. Available rooms at Incline Village in Lake Tahoe for this coming weekend now start at around $100 a night. PackLate’s founder, Steve Barsh, says he got the idea after owning two properties in Park City, Utah, where vacancy rates have reached 50 percent during the economic downturn, and finding that he could cut his losses by steeply discounting his rates at the last minute. ....
