We see few Russian films here and our familiarity with Russians is
often limited to the very tough guys of the Kremlin. "Vanished Empire"
is a reassuring view into Soviet life in the early 1970s. It's
convincing characters are warm, animated, lovable. Family and friends
"do" for eachother readily and enthusiastically.

But this is a society so parched for Western-style consumer goods that
a used Japanese radio can get a friend out of police custody and a
nice jacket plus gas money will induce a cab driver to take someone to
the hinterlands and back.

The focal character Sergey, well and charmingly rendered by Aleksandr
Lyapin, is a likeable young university student. Like most 18 year-old
boys he is impulsive and easily suggestible. His romance with his
girlfriend Lyuda is in full bloom but a call from his comrades can
make him forget his commitments to the lady. Loyalty to one's buddies
trumps faithfulness to one's lover.

Sergey's inattention to those who love him and his personal rebellion
against his teachers are forgiven, up to a point, given Sergey's charm
and good looks. But the carefree life of a teenager cannot last. Life
becomes serious and the due bill for vanity is inevitably presented.

The female characters in this movie are long-suffering. Though not ill-
treated physically, they are never valued above male friendship.
Sergey's treatment of his girlfriend Lyuda reminded me of a
documentary some years ago by a young American lady who had been an
exchange student in Moscow. She had boyfriends there but when asked if
she ever thought to marry any of them, she said "no." She said that,
in Russia, a woman might be loved but she will never be respected.
